Interpretations

It's amazing how many different interpretations can come from one poem. Today in class, we split into groups of three to discuss how we interpreted the poem "Song" by W.H. Auden. I was amazed that such drastically different ideas could be pulled from this one poem. My interpretation was more uplifting whereas other people took the poem to be somewhat cynical. This poem was about love and how it changes over time (at least, thats what I took it to be about). I think the age of the reader would be a big factor in the interpretation of this poem because chances are, the older you get, the more experience you have with love. I myself (being seventeen) can't say I have had too much experience with love. I look at this poem and see an interesting story, whereas some of my older classmates may be able to relate this poem to an experience they've had. It just amazes me how subjective writing is and how many different meanings can be pulled from the same piece of work.

  1. I agree. I will listen to others interpretations and be like "where the heck did u get that from?" My opinions are usually different but it's cool to hear someones when it was the same as yours because you know you were on the same page as that person.

  2. My biggest problem when interpreting poems is that i always see the literal meaning. Interpreting an authors symbolism is so hard because 10 different people can have 10 different answers and they can all be right.

  3. I find it interesting to hear the ideas of others in the group because we all think differently. I find poems confusing but it is exciting to share your ideas with others.

  4. I found it interesting with what some peoples' ideas were. I was confused how some people came up with some of their ideas while with others I thought the same exact thing.
